I participated in my 2nd Zoom bookclub last night and as much as I miss seeing folks IRL, the bookclub part is actually a lot better on Zoom. No side conversations. Only one person talking at a time. It's easier to moderate. AND it's great to share video clips (one person shares their screen). Also, no one had to drive in the dark :-)Maryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07047968915708927082noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5141954207305878743.post-49574764712255899992020-04-21T18:00:54.960-04:002020-04-21T18:00:54.960-04:00I love the TITLE so much ! I was dubious, but I found the characters to be well written, and the story universal. Looking forward to discussing it as I think there are lots of things that can be discussed. You've described exactly what we were hoping to discover through this book -- including supporting an author of color who is using her own, authentic voice! I started reading the book just last night, and before I opened the cover, I did my best to channel 13-year-old Kym. I want to read this book through that "lens" of myself.Kymhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01332895223302876006noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5141954207305878743.post-76821522867361534192020-04-21T07:28:22.233-04:002020-04-21T07:28:22.233-04:00I think your librarian friend was spot on in her a...I think your librarian friend was spot on in her assessment of YA literature and its challenges. Teens, in my experience, have a very low BS threshold. They have little patience for insincerity or anything trite or cutesy. Most of the good YA fiction I've read has been, to generalize, a bit depressing, but I think that's what makes it so realistic. I remember how hard it was to be a teen (particularly a teen girl), and the successful YA fiction I've read really does a good job of capturing that angst. I think this book is in that category, but I think what sets it apart is that it deals with the additional pressures of being a first-generation child of immigrant parents. I'm looking forward to our discussion!Sarahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05434256661615289001noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5141954207305878743.post-28859586743595781032020-04-21T07:15:47.602-04:002020-04-21T07:15:47.602-04:00I am almost finished with this book and I'm re...I am almost finished with this book and I'm really enjoying it. I've read some reviews from readers who don't like the book because they don't like Julia (and boy are they critical of her!) but I think Julia is a wonderful character.
