Pickle Day: A Short Story in Pictures

John picked a bunch of cucumbers on Wednesday so yesterday was pickle day. I make refrigerator dills because anytime I've canned pickles in the past they've ended up less than crisp and nobody eats them. It also helps to have a spare refrigerator in the cellar where we store beer, garden produce, and pickles.

Because cucumbers float, I'll have to turn the spears around and stir the slices occasionally to make sure they're all exposed to the brine evenly, but that's easy enough to do. The kitchen smells strongly of pickles, as do my hair and clothes, but that's okay. Soon enough we'll be enjoying lots of delicious dill pickles!

  2. They look good and I hope you'll be able to eat them soon! We've just discovered that the mystery plants in our pot are cucumbers (the seeds didn't germinate in the starter trays, so I thought they were duds and tossed the soil in there, only to be surprised when something started growing), so perhaps I will be making pickles soon, too!

  4. Y'know . . . I LOVE pickles (of all types). But I have never tried making my own. Is it hard? Can I do it, do you think? (I am not someone who . . . cans or preserves.) (Just sayin.)

  5. There is nothing as good as a fresh dill on a hot summer day! They always bring back memories of my great aunt Bertha and uncle Earl. They had quite a garden and kept a pickle barrel on their back porch. I remember how excited we were when Bertha told us they were ready to eat, we'd sit in her garden and eat one after another until we were full!

    1. A real pickle barrel - that is wonderful! My grandmother kept a big crock of pickles on her porch and I can just imagine all of you eating pickles to your heart's content!
