I'm joining Kat and fellow Unravelers for Unraveled Wednesday with a view of the Peace Cowl, and the mistake I made on it last night (right at the orange stitch marker, about six rows back).
The cowl has provided some lovely, peaceful knitting this week, and I sat down with it during our Read With Us discussion of Young Mungo last night, thinking that I would be able to focus on the relatively simple four-row pattern while our reading group talked. The book was so emotional and difficult that I really couldn't focus on knitting while we shared our reactions. But reading the book was also so worthwhile (I feel rearranged and think differently) that a small knitting mistake was completely worth it. I may have to rip back to make repairs, but that's okay. Now this cowl will always remind me of peace and the wonderful discussion we had of Young Mungo. Time to unravel!
In other reading news, I listened to The Island of Sea Women and The Wedding Dress Sewing Circle last week. They were both perfectly pleasant three-star reads for me but lacked the emotional impact of Young Mungo. (And now I'm finally done talking about Young Mungo, at least until our wrap-up next week.)
What are you making and reading this week?
I think I was wise to stick with stockinette in the round during our discussion! I read The Island of Sea Women last year (I think?) and thought it was interesting but also pretty uninspiring, so it was a three-star read for me as well.
ReplyDeleteI'm still working on my brother's sweater, socks for my daughter, and her Hitchhiker (sort of hold at the moment), and I'm reading A Girl Is a Body of Water, which is set in Uganda in the '70s and is a quite different read.
Likewise, I could not knit last night either! (and mine was a simple sock!!) I am reading Monogamy and what a curious book that is! I like it... but I am not so sure about the characters. They are certainly a strange group of people.
ReplyDeleteLast night's discussion/conversation was so wonderful. I really love that we all come together and talk about books...each of us with our own opinions/emotions. I don't try to knit during our talks...but maybe next time I can have something really simple (a dishcloth perhaps?) that I could work on. Mabel was a bit disruptive last night so I had to jump up and down a lot. My Guernsey Wrap is finished (!) and I need/want to cast on something new. I'm reading "Meet Me At The Museum" by Anne Youngson.
ReplyDeleteI'm on a roll of no mistakes so you know what's coming around the corner with that smug attitude! Lovely knitting :)
ReplyDeleteThat "simple" kind of rhythmic stitch . . . bites me in the butt whenever I try to talk to people while knitting it. The pattern seems simple and mindless, but . . . it is not. I'm glad you have knit some of those good book group vibes into your cowl! What a lovely way to remember our discussion. XO
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry our discussion lead to problems with your knitting!
ReplyDeletewhew - I'm impressed you even thought about knitting a project in a dark color with a pattern for that book discussion ... at night!!
ReplyDeleteI admire your ability to knit during a zoom book discussion! I would have messed up the simple Musselburgh hat I'm knitting if I tried to knit during our discussion!
ReplyDeleteI should have known better, but I'll have some unraveling for next week's Unraveled Wednesday. I think I'll stick to Hitchhikers for book discussion knitting.
DeleteI love the way memories get knit into projects. Sometimes a pleasant three star read is just what I need so thanks for the reviews.
