This weekend was a bit different because we stayed in Maryland instead of going home to New Jersey. The lawn in NJ doesn't need to be mowed every week, and John wanted to do some work on the house here in MD. Probably the biggest reason for staying put is the construction on the Delaware Memorial Bridge. This has been going on for several months and will continue through October. No matter what day or what time we head north, we end up sitting still in bridge construction traffic for 45 minutes or more. It was a real treat not to be stuck in that mess!
So what did I do with my extra time this weekend? Remember Central Tavern, my favorite place to eat in Elkton? I picked up takeout for lunch on Saturday.
A delicious burger topped with a perfectly fried egg, buffalo chicken macaroni and cheese, and a drink pouch with cranberry juice, orange vodka, and peach schnapps provided me with a very tasty lunch and lots of leftovers.
I spied a baby praying mantis on my walk home. He was only a couple inches long in real life but is obviously enlarged here.
There is a new episode of The Great British Baking Show so after watching it I was inspired to do some baking myself. Mmm ... pound cake. It was not a low-calorie weekend, but I did take plenty of walks when it wasn't raining.
One of the walks I took was to return Conversations with RBG to the library. My route back took me past a new elementary school. I was intrigued by their blue "support people" and the big "WE CAN!" I'm sure it's meant to send a positive message, but I also thought about my experiences with my own boys and seven years spent working in an elementary school library. I could think of quite a few examples of kids who would push the envelope if they heard "We Can". We can ... have ice cream for breakfast, stay up until 2:00 am watching scary movies, never eat vegetables, play video games as much as we like, never do homework ... The possibilities are endless!
And it wouldn't be a weekend if I didn't discover yet another mistake I made about twelve rows back on the current Hitchhiker. I had dropped a stitch and was unable to ladder it back up because of the rows of eyelets I've added. Unraveling ensued, then more knitting, and being much more careful. I'm certainly getting good knitting value out of this yarn (and it kept me from eating too much pound cake).
Sounds like you and John took the high road by staying put, Bonny! I'm glad you had a good weekend full of good food, less cooking, knitting, and reading. Sounds about as perfect as they get these days. My weekend was full of sick dogs and puny husbands, but I still have hopes for a good week ahead. I don't think I could read anything in depth about RBG yet. My husband has been watching a lot of RBG on TV, and it makes me tear up. A sea change may be coming, I think, and although it will not affect me directly, it affects my gender, and for that I am sincerely sad. But the pendulum swings, and I am certain it will swing back eventually. I started Monogamy by Sue Miller, and I am intrigued. We'll see. Let's have a good Monday, full of We Can!
ReplyDeleteThat Hitchhiker is just so darn pretty Bonny! And you are getting knitting mileage out of that yarn, for sure (worry you had to rip back some...those rows are getting long!). Your food looks delicious and now (7:20 a.m.) I'd like some mac & cheese please. Glad you avoided the traffic snarls (why is it those bridge and/or road repairs always take SO long?).
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun weekend! (That burger looks amazing!) and I just love that Hitchhiker... it is the perfect combination of yarn and pattern! Happy Monday (and here is to a week without any "traffic snarls" either!)
ReplyDeleteIt's always good to mix things up a bit on the weekend (at least now and then)! It sounds like you did just that -- and I hope you are feeling refreshed and ready for another week. XO
ReplyDeleteI am glad I am reading your post now rather than later, when the fasting really gets to me, because that meal looks delicious! I'm glad you were able to take advantage of a weekend in MD.
ReplyDeleteI bet it was sort of fun to stay in Maryland over the weekend. Your burger looks so good although I've never been tempted to try one with a fried egg on top personally. I love the idea and look of it, though! Too bad about the hitchhiker error, good thing you look that pattern so much!
ReplyDeleteThe shawl is giving you fits. I would put it in a another shape......I can get so frustrated because , Really, no one is going to make a shawl without one or two or ten mistakes. I have to choose patterns that I can hide or fix. I almost never rip out more than 2 or 3 inches and continue back. I get too mad at the pattern and Myself.
ReplyDeleteOh drat that hitchhiker. Some projects just keep on giving. I think that one is totally worth all the knitting time. I love the bright sunset colors. I'm glad you weren't stuck in the construction mess this weekend. The pound cake looks good enough to eat.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a good weekend!
ReplyDeleteThough I have to say that if someone served me a burger with an egg on top, I'd probably have to leave the table. :-)
mistakes are not fun at all. That burger looks delicious and it sounds like you had a satisfying weekend!!
ReplyDeleteoh I love the WE CAN sign (I had a similar "I can" moment last week :-) So sorry for the HH boo-boo, and glad it's back on track. ALSO, yay for adult drink pouches. yum!!
ReplyDeleteI love the way you think! :-) And that pouch! I spent the weekend cleaning, cleaning, cleaning as Dan and Danna will arrive Friday for the weekend. I had a dropped stitch a couple of weeks ago and tinked about 1000 stitches back because I wasn't positive about what was really going on. Haven't we been at this long enough???? Wishing you a great week ahead my friend!
