There were other things that did leave me feeling a bit unraveled this week -- more masks. Ryan had some suggestions for modifications to the previous ones I had made (larger overall and deeper pleats), so I finally sucked it up and sewed. He also wondered if I had a different fabric, so this time he gets Turtles on Parade.
I made two of the pleated kind, and two of the close-to-the-face type. I went slowly, pressed as I sewed, and tried to sew carefully, so I feel like these look a little bit better than my previous attempts. Sewing is still outside of my comfort zone, but I'm afraid I may be getting a lot more comfortable with it in the upcoming months.
I don't have any more elastic, so there was a fun part of this project: cutting up a t-shirt to make t-shirt yarn. We have two trash bags full of old t-shirts so I've got plenty of supplies, and it's almost magic!
Who knows? Maybe I'll be making giant balls of t-shirt yarn and crocheting bathmats by the time the pandemic is over! (Don't count on it.)
I started and finished Redhead by the Side of the Road by Anne Tyler as a quick, fun audiobook. My real reading treat is Apeirogon by Colum McCann. Like everyone else who has read it, I think it's wonderful and like nothing I have ever read before. I don't know whether to ignore everything and everybody in my life to rush through it or savor it slowly.
What are you making and reading this week?
I think your masks look fantastic! I had Apeirogon from Libby but had to return it before I got a chance to read it so I'm back on the list.
ReplyDeletelove your masks and of course your ever so cheerful hitchhiker!! Great idea about the tee shirts and I do believe you will be making mats :)
ReplyDeleteI love the t-shirt yarn idea!! I have been trying to figure out some way that Vivi would actually *wear* her mask, and maybe this is the answer! Thank you thank you thank you!
ReplyDeleteAnd, Apeirogon... so good I am on the list to LISTEN to it :)
Your masks look really professional! I've been skipping the pressing part because I really can't be bothered, but perhaps it really does make a difference!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you're enjoying Apeirogon. I wanted to savor it but found I couldn't stop reading, so I just went with it.
Love your turtle marching masks - they look great Bonny! I couldn't be bothered to be really careful when I was making my masks (because I didn't/don't really want to wear one) and my careless/quick sewing shows. Your Hitchhiker, of course, is gorgeous. I can't wait to wind my Vicki yarn and start mine!
ReplyDeleteThe t-shirt ties are THE BEST for face masks, I think. (And it's so satisfying to cut up your cast-off t-shirts for a useful purpose, isn't it?) I love the turtles-on-parade fabric. Such happy masks! I just loved Apeirogon. It's just an immensely satisfying read on every single front. (I actually listened to it while reading along with the physical book. It's a great audiobook -- narrated by the author.) XO
ReplyDeleteI too had to make several modifications to my masks till I got them perfect, t-shirt are the best! I have been looking for more t-shirts that I can part with since my big purge last fall. Your fabric is great!
ReplyDeleteI think these look great!
ReplyDeleteThose masks are great! Very impressed with the close to the face one! And as usual your Hitchhiker is gorgeous!!!
ReplyDeleteI am glad to know that the t-shirt ties work so well. The elastic I put on our masks is starting to shrink in the dryer. I feel compelled to launder them with hot water and a hot dryer. I love that Hitchhiker. Darn that weaving in fairy - I take it she didn't make an appearance. All in good time.
ReplyDeleteI love "jersey ropes" for face masks -- I've been using scraps from my Alabama Chanin projects, and cut them pretty narrow.
ReplyDeleteThat Hitchhiker is AMAZING!! :)
I love the image of the rugs!!! Go go go! I have to go back to Kim and tell her about your book. She's looking for one
ReplyDeleteI am so spoiled as I was able to buy masks. Smith's workplace is giving them a mask each day to wear in the store (thank goodness). Your turtles are very striking. I love to see the various masks people use. Apeirogon is my book of the year and I loved listening to the author read his story, but I also bought the book so I can read it again.
ReplyDeleteThose turtles are awesome! as are those masks and the HH in progress. (and personally, I think crocheting a mat with those t-shirt scraps is a brilliant idea ... I'm only sorry we don't have two bags of them here!)
