I'm glad these socks are done, and they only took me ten years!
Finishing one pair of socks does not necessarily mean a return of any sock mojo I might have once had, but we'll see. I dug around in my craft closet and found this one. It's a sock I was working on when I took my father to doctors' appointments, but I put it away when he died. It does have a nice story associated with it, so I think it may become what I work on during the weekly NJ-to-MD-and-back-again trip.
I'd still rather work on my Nervous Breakdown Hitchhiker, so that's my main project. It's growing (and I just might have more Nervous Breakdown yarn to knit another one with eyelets).
I finished The Wife by Meg Wolitzer and it was an average, yet interesting book. It made me want to see the movie with Glenn Close as I think she might make the movie better than the book. I also started The Topeka School, and so far it's dense, challenging, and intriguing. Semi-autobiographical, debate and forensics, toxic masculinity, fear begetting violence, psychotherapy -- it's all here and I hope it comes together. Even though I'm only a little way into the book, it's easy to tell that it was written by a poet, National Book Award finalist, Fulbright scholar, Guggenheim scholar, and MacArthur genius. Clearly, Ben Lerner is some author and I hope I'm up to reading The Topeka School.
What are you making and reading this week?
Hooray for a finished pair of socks! I'm guessing that it won't take 10 years to finish the next pair. And I love how your Nervous Breakdown Hitchiker is knitting up!
ReplyDeleteIm not a fan of wolitzer's writing. All of your projects are wonderful! Love the 10 year socks, better late than never!!
ReplyDeleteThose socks are winners! I love the color and the pattern! (and you and Carole might just have inspired me to finish the socks I have on the needles and cast on a pair for my son!) I am listening to Isabel Allende's Island Beneath the Sea and am really loving this story.
ReplyDeleteI love those finished socks - the texture and yarn make for a great combination! Your Hitchhiker looks fabulous, so bright and cheerful. I didn't read The Wife but the movie is very good so I'd recommend it for sure.
ReplyDelete(I wrote this comment . . . and then seemed to lose it. So if you get 2 similar-but-not-quite identical comments from me today, that's why!)
ReplyDeleteYour 10-year-socks are WINNERS, Bonny! Your sister is very lucky - and obviously very loved. (My sock-knitting-mojo disappeared long ago. I don't think it's coming back . . . ) Your knitting-now socks remind me of a Creamsicle -- my favorite ice cream truck treat.
The Topeka School IS really dense and challenging. It took me a long time to read it. But it did come together for me in the end, and I loved it. (I have never liked a Meg Wolitzer book. She is simply not my author. . . )
Beautiful socks Bonny! So nice that you picked them up again to finish. I agree with Kym that the second ones remind me or a Creamsicle! And your Nervous Breakdown Hitchhiker is fabulous. What a cheerful knit!! (I'm wearing a Hitchhiker today!!)
ReplyDeleteSock finishes for me is a huge thing! I always get second sockitis, though I love to knit them.
ReplyDeleteI love the Nervous Breakdown Hitchhiker, so much of my knitting I feel is the result of my nerves, lately getting things done.
I love your finished socks, and SERENA SOCKS! That Hitchhiker is AMAZING! That colorway - WOW!!
ReplyDeleteAllll of those socks are terrific! I do think socks are the go to during a drive too. I've got the Wife in my to watch queue too (I think because of your Goodreads review!) Before We Were Yours got snatched away by the libary wifi Gods this morning so I'm going to have to wait to finish it. Just started Long Bright River by Liz Moore...we shall see!
ReplyDeleteHitchhiker is amazing Bonnie. I also love your socks. I am not reading right now, except blogs. I am listening to lots of podcasts though. Terrible, Thanks for asking is very good.
ReplyDeleteThose socks look great. Your sister will love them. The hitchhiker is such a breath of fresh green color this week. I am glad you have enough yarn for another. Interesting books. I tried one book by Meg Wolitzer and just couldn't get into it. If you knit on the orange and white socks while in the car they will be done before you know it. Nothing like being captive in a car for making progress on a sock project.
ReplyDeleteI love those socks! I hope you get your sock mojo back. It's nice to have a couple of things going depending on your mood. I have made no headway knitting. I have too much to do! And it seems to me that I have let a lot go, so I don't know where the time is going. Sorry, I digress. Topeka School sounds intriguing. I will have to look more closely at that one.
ReplyDeleteI am all in for your return to socks - that finished pair is beautiful and I remember the Serena story! - and glad you're still knitting all the hitchhikers!
ReplyDeleteThat sock mojo can be very fickle but even if it returns in small doses you'll eventually have a pair of socks to accompany your lovely memory of Serena. The Topeka School is a book that takes deliberate reading. It's not an easy read, but it is rewarding. Meg Wolitzer is not an author I care for and won't invest time in any more of her books.Your Hitchhikers are always exciting to watch. This one lives up to its name perfectly. LOL
