Begin As You Mean to Go On

My Grandmother used to say "begin as you mean to go on", and I always think of her and this saying as each New Year begins. When I was a young child, I took it very literally -- that at the stroke of midnight I should actually be doing the things I wanted to continue doing. Decades later, I think of it more figuratively. I do happen to be knitting at midnight, and while I hope that there will be plenty of knitting in 2020, I also hope that peace, happiness, health, and contentment figure largely.

And maybe 2020 will be the year I don't have to pretend.

  1. Happy New Year, Bonny. I _love_ that coffee mug! It sums it up very well. I hope your year will be filled with the best of times, and I intend to have a good day to start the year. I hope you do as well.

  4. Happy new year! I've liked that saying since I heard it years ago, and I hope that it proves to be true (I mean, I have no doubt that you'll continue to knit all year, but I'm hoping that mug is a prophecy!).

  6. I was sleeping at midnight, which might be the best way to approach the next year. :) Years ago we had friends who believed in the literal iteration and they wouldn't go out on New Years so they could be....
    Happy New Year, Bonny!

  14. I love your coffee cup and so agree! My daughter called me on NY day and said" 2020 is going to be a GOOD year". Me:"Why?" Her: "It's trump's last year in office!" Gotta love that!
