Three on Thursday

Joining Carole and friends for Three on Thursday, today with Three Things I Did Not Know (But Found Out This Week).

I had no idea that coneflowers came in a white variety. I took a walk to the library and liquor store and while taking a short cut around the middle school, I came upon this patch of black-eyed-susans and white coneflowers. I think I like them even better than the purple variety.

I also didn't know that bed steps would be so readily available. When Raymour & Flanigan assembled one of our beds, they set it up so the mattress was at the highest level. I struggle to get in every night, feeling like I have to take a running leap. I thought about maybe getting a set of bed steps, but hadn't even looked. On Sunday I went to an estate sale just down the street, and when I walked into the bedrooms upstairs, there were three different sets of bed steps! Two of them were sold, but the third ones are now helping me step daintily into bed. It was like a gift from the universe, and I only paid $5.00 for them along with a bunch of baking pans.

Lastly, I never suspected that Republicans (and Democrats, too, if I'm honest) liked to hear themselves talk so much. <Insert uproarious laughter here.> Just kidding! If there is one thing I do know, it is that most politicians* of all persuasions are enamored of what they have to say, and think that we are, too.
*I'm sure that this description does not extend to Carole!

Did you find out anything new this week?

Head on over to Carole's for more Three on Thursday thoughts.

  1. Adam Schiff looks a little crazy in your photo -- almost like he's surprised that you'd even suggest that you didn't know politicians like to hear themselves talk!

I learned this week that even the most senior administrators at the university where I work don't seem to care about being factually correct. It's a good thing they have me fact checking and proofreading their work!

  2. Coneflowers come in nearly endless varieties these days! I tried a lovely orange-ish variety one season -- and, despite being perennials, they did only last . . . one season. Turns out that a lot of those lovely, newer varieties aren't quite as hardy as the good, old purple coneflower variety. "Mixed results" is the gardener's critique when it comes to "the new coneflowers." That said, the lovely white coneflowers you found look like they're doing Just Fine! :-) And I will never be able to get the image of you taking a flying leap into bed each night out of my head -- even though I now know you are using a dainty little bed step. XO (And when it comes to politicians? Ugh. No comment.)

  3. I'm with Kym picturing you taking a flying leap into bed each evening - lol. The little steps are cute. Nice find at the estate sale. I had no idea that cone flowers came in other colors!

OK, now that I've learned something it may be time for me to go home (8:20 a.m.). I wish....

  4. I am loving your political commentary! I do believe that all of the cable news stations could use a healthy dose of that!

And, those bed steps! Tres chic! I do so love the idea of a flying leap into bed though... it reminds me of doing that *all the time* (much to my mother's chagrin) when I was a child!

  5. Fun three!! This week I learned that a mama bird will actually build a new nest on top of her dead babies, if she had babies too early in the spring that didn't survive...I know this sounds pretty grim, but we had a great experience watching birds hatch & grow this summer. And then we noticed that the nest had been built ON TOP of a former nest. Of babies. An ornithologist we know explained all this, very stoically...that it's all just part of nature. True. But I still can't help but wince. Hope that wasn't TMI. But it's what I found out that was new to me this week! Happy weekend.

    1. A bit grim, but interesting! It's always a good reminder that nature is not really sweetly anthropomorphic in a Disney-like way, even if we wish it was.

  6. Politicians think that the more they talk (for the record) the more chance there is of something insightful coming from their mouths. I don't think it works that way, but whatev.....
I love your bed steps! They're very nice and I like the ivy design.

  7. I love those flowers in all color varieties. And those bedsteps are lovely. So very functionable too. I try to stay away from any political comments, but yes, politicians love to hear themselves talk...
I learned that having one (more or less) furnished room makes a house so much more like a home, even if you still can't move in there (no electricity!).

    1. Here's hoping your home continues to become even more homey! (And you get electricity soon!)

  8. Love the steps but even more the vision of you running and leaping into bed! I'm learning SO MUCH this week from listening to The Day The World Came To Town. Just the best story of humanity ever.

  9. I need to be on the lookout for a set of bed steps! I think it every time I get into bed. Junah quickly learned to turn over the little trash can I have in there and use it as a step to get onto my bed... he's been doing that for a few years, now, and even runs to the kitchen to empty it first.

  10. Did I ever tell you about the time Dale and I were staying at a swanky inn that had a step to get up into bed? And I fell OFF the step? While I was naked? Yeah. Be careful. Also, the absolute best line of this post is: I took a walk to the library and liquor store.

  11. I admire the coneflowers in my neighborhood when I walk - yellow, rust, raspberry, pink, white. I'd like to add a few to our yard next year - oh wait - I am the one who just told my husband I didn't want any more areas to weed. The bed steps were a great find but the idea of a running leap into bed makes me smile. And as per Carole: be careful.

  12. my bed is almost too high but I can get in easily, it just took a lot of time to remember the height. Frodo cannot get up but he can jump down. I love coneflowers and sadly for some reason they do not stay blooming in my yard (rabbits? groundhog? unlucky?). I'm done with listening to politicians...

  13. I have three coneflowers and am hoping for more!!! We took a bit evergreen down today. Number 15. Hard to replace them all. So expensive . All succumbed to a bug

  14. I think people elected to local office are actually public servants rather than politicians (said the woman who served three terms as a local official).
