Three on Thursday

Joining Carole and friends for this November Three on Thursday. In my ongoing and continuing quest to organize photos, I came across these and today I'm sharing three photos of rocks. Weird, I know, but our family has a thing about rocks so we have lots of pictures of "good" ones.

This one is a photo of Ryan with an interesting rock with lines. Maybe some sort of fossil? I don't know, but he was looking for rocks to skip, and everyone knows you can't skip a good rock. They have to be saved and admired.

Usually good rocks sit around on the mantel or other surfaces, but then we get more good rocks to replace them. The old ones get placed in baskets to corral them and I occasionally look through them. The big crystal in the right hand basket, the one with perfect holes directly beneath it, and the large round one in the left hand basket that Justin swore was an Indian tool used to pound corn (but the rest of us thought was just a big rock) are among my favorites.

And lastly, here's Ryan with a giant piece of petrified wood outside the Mammoth Hot Springs Visitor Center in Yellowstone. I love his expression and Vanna White "here is something special!" hands. I just looked at some photos in Google images and it's still there!

Head on over to Carole's for more Three on Thursday.

  1. "good rocks" :-) The five years we lived in Wyoming made my family huge fans of rocks. I did an elementary school science fair project on the three kinds of rocks (sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic? ... it was a long time ago) That petrified wood piece is epic - yay Ryan for showcasing it for us!

  2. I remember seeing petrified wood out in the wilds of Wyoming and thinking it was SO COOL! We save rocks too!

  3. I love this post...we love rocks too and have various ones around the house...including a basket of rocks/fossils/Indian tools in the downstairs bathroom (a friend once thought they were for scraping callouses...but they are just for looking at/touching). We even have some petrified wood (but nothing as large as Ryan's piece above - lol).

  4. Haha! This is great, and I get it... we have a few "good rocks," but mostly GOOD SHELLS! From the seashore! Haha. They're everywhere. ;)

  5. I love the "good rocks" idea! I have a Petosky stone or two saved from visits to the northern shores of Lake Michigan!

And, Google Images... I think I need to figure this out asap. Especially since Flickr is no longer an option!

  6. So are all the good rocks kept inside, or do you have a rock garden that you tend to regularly? I'll admit I'm also a fan of interesting rocks, but they've proven to be a bit impractical to move from place to place.

  7. Great rocks!!! I have always had a bit of a Thing with rocks myself (and so does my Brian), so I LOVE to see your "good" rocks! When I was a little girl, and had found yet another "good" rock to bring home, my dad used to tell me I couldn't have that particular rock because it was a "leaverite" . . . as in Leave 'er Right There! (Very funny, Dad.) XO

  8. Looking at the above comments, I would never have guessed that so many people have a thing for rocks. Me, too! I have an affinity for river rocks, those smooth ones that are great to put in your pocket and use for a worry stone. I love your collection, Bonny, it's very interesting.

  10. Oh, what fun! I filled a small jar with rocks I picked up in my travels, unfortunately, I haven't traveled much lately.

  11. I look for heart shaped rocks and ask friends to pick up rocks when they travel to unique places (tiny rocks). Your rocks are exceptional! How fun to have a family rock album!

  12. Oh Ryan looks so little :) I have sea shells in glass jars all over the place from beach vacations. I smile when I see them. We have smooth stones too from the beach.
