Unraveled Wednesday

Joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday.

You've probably seen enough pictures of my No Regrets hitchhiker, and knitting on it continues slowly and steadily. Because I care about you as a reader and don't want you to be bored, I decided to start something new. The beads are a new thing for me so I feel like I'm all thumbs, but hopefully I'll get better at placing them with practice. I'm still not 100% sure of my bead placement (on the second stitch of the k2tog or the single stitch produced by the k2tog) and I think I'll try placing the beads with a flosser instead of the crochet hook, but a little experimentation and practice should help. I've barely begun, but I think I'm going to like it.

We're in the middle of some fearsome thunderstorms, so this photo is way too dark.
Imagine something more along the lines of the color above with sparkly silver-lined beads.

I'm looking at an avalanche of books because I might have over-requested from Netgalley and Overdrive, and of course, many of them came in at once. I've got Robin Sloan's latest, Sourdough, on my kindle which I need to finish and review for Netgalley. I procrastinated for almost a week because even though I loved his first book, Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, this one sounded a little too out there. I finally just started it, and it's actually a pretty good read so far. (Good enough that I was up until 2 am reading it!)

I'm listening to The Child as an audio book, and it's a mystery. It fits into the mystery genre, but it's also a mystery as to why I might have requested it in Overdrive. Did I do it by accident, or get confused in my post-Book Bingo rush to read something different? It's quite outside my usual reading tastes, but I thought I might as well listen since it was already checked out to me. I think I guessed the outcome but am going to finish it to see if I am right. Then it's on to the rest of the books in the Overdrive queue, hopefully before What Happened is published next Tuesday.

What are you knitting and reading this week?

  1. I am racing through Beach Music and am eagerly anticipating What Happened! I think I am in the same boat with you on post-Book Bingo read all the things! My "want to read" list has grown dramatically on Goodreads!

  2. Lovely blue knitting, I'm knitting with a colorway called wild mallard, I love it. I am reading another Gamache book, the second in the series, easy light and little thinking involved. I also started lilac girls which is a bit heavier to digest.

  3. The blue and the beads are so pretty together. And reading! Sourdough looks good- I'm going to look for that one. I did have several come through on overdrive and I have a bunch in queue...hoping against hope that they don't all come in at once - lol.

  4. Knitting - I am slowly getting back to it after a bout of arthritis, it feels so good to have yarn in my hands. Your beads are so attractive with the vibrant blue, more thumbs might help!
Reading - I an eager to read Sourdough, so far my library doesn't have it, I might have to buy it and then share with my relatives. Right now, "A Gentleman In Moscow" is entertaining me a lot, so quaint and old fashioned. I've had it on my shelves for months.
I finished "March" book 1 by John Lewis - a graphic book for adults, it surprised me so much about that time in the late 60-70's, I was so engrossed in studying at college I never thought about racial unrest, or much of anything in the news, I was a naive hick from a rural town. Nowadays I am so impressed by Mr. Lewis. I recommend this "comic book" but it does deal with potent issues, but told in a decent and empathetic way.

    1. I'm really enjoying Sourdough and hope to finish it today. It's just weird enough to be good! I read the first March book by John Lewis and even though I'm not a great graphic novel reader, I thought it was a terrific way to convey his story and important issues. My library is purchasing the 2nd and 3rd books, soon I hope!

  5. Oooh, pretty! The only time I knit with beads was when I also knit with wire... some earrings on Knitty that Romi designed... double-whammy! ;)

  6. I think that looks lovely! The bead thing is a complete mystery to me. I got dumped on by the library at the end of the summer and had to let so many go by. I'm also listening to Beach Music...25 hours...I may be done by Christmas! :-)

    1. Beads do look lovely in knitting, but I'm not sure if I'll stick with it long enough to get better with them, or get frustrated and give up. We'll see ... :-)

  8. I'm nearing the end of The History of Love and I wonder how I missed this one 10 years ago? I'm really enjoying it! I pre-ordered What Happened and look forward to reading it on my kindle. Your shawl is going to be lovely, I like the look of the beads with the blue yarn. I knit a cape style wrap with beads for my niece when she was 9 or 10. I was never sure of the bead placement, but it looked fine in the end and she loved it.

  9. I don't think there is any un-fiddle-y way to add beads (which is probably the biggest reason I don't do it!) But they're going to be a lovely addition to the shawl. Interesting books - I love the way that Sourdough cover moves!

  10. The beads look lovely, but my one foray into beading while knitting drove me nuts. It was several years ago, so maybe I should try again. Hopefully, my patience has improved some over the years. I just finished Glass Houses, another Louise Penny gem. I have requested Sourdough from the library. Thanks for the tip, Bonny!

    1. I've only tried beads on two small rows, and I don't know if I'll honestly have the patience to do any more. I had to put it down this afternoon when I got frustrated and the prospect of finishing Sourdough looked much more interesting!

  11. I am still knitting that baby blanket. LOL. But I have to finish tomorrow because I need time to block it and then it needs to dry before the shower on Saturday. I'm reading All Things Cease to Appear and I like it.

  12. I am reading #3 Louise Penny's A Cruelest Month and a ton of other non-fiction books...just about to finish my next to last Top This hat for little ones...which is good 'cause I've run out of kiddos to give them to. Cool book cover - animated!
    Knit and bead on!
    Cheers~

  13. I love the beads! It's fun to add bling to a project . . . but hoo-boy! It does slow one down. ;-)
I just finished reading the new Louise Penny, and now I'm slogging through my book group's latest selection. (It's a good thing I really like the women in my book group -- because I'm not usually on board with their selections.)

  14. I just ran across that book and put it on my want to read list too!

  15. Adding beads can be a fiddly process, but they add a whole new dimension to the finished scarf. I'm reading a classic, "To the North", by a not well known author Elizabeth Bowen. It's fascinating reading. I just finished my long time knitting project Spice Market. YAY!
